*  Grover Cleveland, the 22nd President of the United States, was in office.

*  The Pasteur Institute in Paris was founded.

*  Baseball player Ty Cobb was born.

*  R. L. Stevenson wrote "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde".

*  The element germanium was discovered by Clemens Wilder.

*  The Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor on October 28th.

*  The Canadian-Pacific Railway was completed.

*  The first patent number of 1886 was 333,494.

*  Alfred Henry Spink published the first issue of the Sporting News on March 17th.  A single copy cost five cents and a year's subscription cost two dollars and fifty cents.

*  John S. Pemberton first introduced Coca-Cola in Atlanta,  Georgia, by concocting a caramel-colored syrup in a three-legged brass kettle in his backyard.
